Potato crop

Chameleons have been busy growing their own potatoes outside our classroom.

Last week they were finally ready to harvest.

We made a delicious potato tortilla and enjoyed eating it during our picnic in the garden.

Touch Typing

In Year 2 we have been learning about touch typing.

Touch typing is when you use all your fingers on a keyboard without looking at the keys.

When you learn how to do it properly it can be quicker than writing.

This is the website we used at school. Go on it at home and practise so you can quicker.

What are the important things to remember when you are touch typing?

Edith Cavell

So far we have learnt all about 2 significant nurses from the past, Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole.  This week we will be learning about another nurse called Edith Cavell.

What can you find out about her?

Why do we remember her?

Significant Nurses

Last week we started our new topic Significant Nurses. We started learning all about Florence Nightingale and why she is a significant nurse from history.  Why do we remember her?  What important facts can you remember about her?

We will also be learning about another significant nurse from history called Mary Seacole.

What can you find out about her?

How do you stay safe online?

Last week was E-Safety week.  What do you know about staying safe online?

We watched this video all about E-Safety. Watch it again with your adults at home and discuss with them about how you can stay safe when you are using the internet.

What are SID’s top tips to help you stay safe online?

Have a look at this website below for more activities to help you learn about E-Safety.

Great Fire of London Poetry

Last week for Big Write we wrote poems about the Great Fire of London. We wrote an acrostic poem which is a type of poetry where the first letters in a line spell out a particular word.

Here are some of our poems:

What words did you use to describe the Great Fire of London in your poem?

What expanded noun phrases did you use?

What do you like about these poems?

Arrays, repeated addition and multiplication

In maths we have been learning about arrays and repeated addition.

Here is a picture of an array:

This array shows ‘4 lots of five’ or ‘4 groups of five’. We wrote repeated addition number sentences to go with our arrays.

The repeated addition number sentence to go with this array would be

5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 20

You can also show it as a multiplication number sentence like this:

4 x 5 = 20

We can use arrays to help us work out multiplications.

Look at these arrays.  What number sentences would you write to show how many there are in each array?

Gummy bears array

Cakes array

Eggs array

Draw some of your own arrays.  Write a repeated addition and multiplication number sentence to go with them. Bring them in to share with the rest of the class.

Fire! Fire!

This week we will be starting to learn about our new topic, which is all about The Great Fire of London.

What can you find out about this huge fire?

Don’t forget to leave your comments.

Daffodil bulb planting

Chameleons have been busy planting daffodil bulbs. They have been using their knowledge of planting bulbs to show the rest of the school how to plant their own bulbs so we can all have a competition to see which class can grow the tallest daffodil.

What do you have to remember when planting bulbs?

When should the daffodils start growing?

What do you have to do to look after them?

The Science Museum

What a great day we had at the Science Museum! Look at our pictures to see what we got up to.

Do you know your doubles and halves?

In Maths we have been doubling and halving numbers.

Click on the link below to play Hit the Button and see how many doubles or halves you can get right in 1 minute.

Doubling and halving

What number sentence could you write to show what double 3 is?

How does knowing your doubles help you work out halves of numbers?

I think of a number and double it.  The answer is 18.  What number was I thinking of?  Explain how you know.

Can you make up your own doubling and halving problem.

Leave your answers.

Anti-Bullying week

This week was national Anti-Bullying week and across the school we have been supporting this year’s theme ‘Power for Good’.  Well done Chameleons for wearing blue on Friday to show your support for anti-bullying.

Chameleons have been discussing the importance of speaking out against bullying and knowing what to do if they think bullying is happening to them or anyone else.

Watch this video about a young girl who was being bullied and what she did to stop it.

How do we know this girl was being bullied?

What did she do to stop the bullying?

What would you do to help someone that is being bullied?

Leave your comments.

Chameleons have been busy planting seeds and bulbs.  We planted daffodil and hyacinth bulbs ready for spring.  We sowed some lettuce seeds which we are looking forward to trying when they grow.  We also learnt how to grow our own sunnies from sunflower seeds. We will be observing our plants over time and looking at the changes.

What new skills did you learn?

Can you remember some of the important things you have to do when planting seeds or bulbs?

Journeys in Space

This term our topic is Journey in Space.

We have been reading a fantastic story in English called The Man on the Moon.

What is your favourite part of the story?

Would you like to go to the moon?  Why?

What facts can you find out about the moon?

Black History Month

We have been celebrating Black History Month. We’ve been reading a book called Henry’s Freedom Box.

It is a true story about a slave called Henry who mailed himself to Freedom in a box. It really got us thinking and we imagined ourselves as Henry and wrote a diary entry for our Big Write.

We also thought about what freedom is and the  things we get do because we are free. What freedoms are you thankful for?

What do you know about fire safety?

Last week we were visited by the London Fire Brigade to learn all about fire safety. We learnt how to keep safe at home to help prevent fires and what to do if there ever was a fire.

Look at the pictures of the visit and talk to your adults at home about fire safety. Remember to give your adults the special homework to help them learn all  about fire safety too.

See if you can remember the answers to these fire safety questions:

What smells for smoke and warns us if there is a fire?

What number would you call if there was a fire?

If there was a fire, what should you shout to other people in your home to let them know?

Share your answers and comments about fire safety.

Fruity Kebabs!

Last week we had fun making fruit kebabs.  Have a look at our pictures.  What skills did you use to make your fruit kebab?

Fruit kebabs are a delicious healthy snack. What fruit did you put on your kebab? What was your favourite fruit?

Eating fruit is one food we can eat to help us stay healthy. Can you think of other foods that we should eat to help us stay healthy?
